How did these two get here?
George Groves really rose to prominence with a controversial 2013 loss to Carl Froch. While that fight brought him much attention, it also marked the start of a rough patch where the previously undefeated Groves went 2-3 and looked like a fighter with a clearly defined (and met) ceiling. But he’s gone 6-0 since - not always against great opposition and not against anyone who is going to erase the memory of those losses to Froch and Badou Jack, but not all total hand-picked pushovers either. Still, this is his toughest test since the loss to Jack in 2015.
Chris Eubank, Jr. has just one lone loss on his record, as he fell to Billy Joe Saunders in 2014. The Hall of Famer’s son is 8-0 since. There have always been those skeptical of Eubank - that’s inherently going to happen when part of your push is based on your father’s status instead of your own. But he has also pushed back those doubts, including a very good and dominant KO win in the WBSS quarterfinals against Avni Yildirim. Eubank has been angling for a fight like this for awhile - he gets his wish here.
George Groves -
Style -
Unlike his opponent on Saturday, Groves enjoyed a stellar career in the unpaid ranks before turning over. As a result, he is well-schooled in the fundamentals and looks to lay traps for his opponents, hoping to lure them into range of his heavy hands.
Strengths -
Groves is a big super-middleweight and will enjoy a sizeable physical advantage over Eubank in Manchester. The 29-year-old is also famed for stiff and spiteful jab, which he uses to keep opponents at distance and control the range.
Complementing his jab is a thudding right hand, which floored Carl Froch and snapped Jamie Cox in half. Martin Murray has fought both Groves and Gennady Golovkin and claimed the Briton carries more single-punch power than the Kazakh KO king.
The Saint also comes into Saturday's semi-final with a wealth of experience on the biggest stage. He has fought the likes of Froch (twice), James DeGale and Badou Jack. And though he has been beaten in some big fights before, those experiences have helped Groves develop superior ring nous and craft.
Weaknesses -
For years, Groves has had to face accusations that he has a glass jaw. The 29-year-old was stopped twice by Froch and floored by Badou Jack, prompting Eubank to declare: 'His chin has an off button'. But will Junior bring enough power to test it?
There are some who believe, too, that Groves' experience won't work entirely in his favour. Eubank, certainly, believes his opponent is scarred mentally from those defeats, while others feel he is a fading physical force. There is certainly evidence to suggest he does not move with the fluency and elusiveness he once did.
Though the Saint is only a year older than his opponent, the 29-year-old has many more miles on the clock after a number of gruelling high-profiled opponents. This, combined with his tendency to get dragged into unnecessary exchanges, have led some to predict that the longer the fight goes, the more likely Eubank is to prevail.
Chris Eubank Jnr -
Style -
Fast and ferocious, Eubank Jnr looks to dominate his opponents with constant and nasty flurries of shots. The 28-year-old comes forward and tries to win every second of every round, often outworking and overwhelming opponents.
Strengths -
Eubank's most obvious advantage over Groves is his speed. The Saint has not proved difficult to hit in recent years and Junior will surely try and punish his opponent with fast combinations.
The challenger is also supremely fit. Rarely out of the gym, Eubank is a phenomenal athlete and will surely come on stronger in the later rounds. Unlike Groves, the Brighton fighter doesn't have to strain to make the 168lb super-middleweight limit, meaning he is unlikely to be drained come fight night.
That excellent conditioning also allows Eubank to throw an incredible amount of punches. Groves has said publicly that he doesn't like wasting shots, and looks to be economical over 12 rounds. But could his relative inactivity cost him on the scorecards?
Weaknesses -
A natural middleweight, Eubank Jnr could give up as much as a stone to his opponent come fight night on Saturday. Groves is very big at the weight and could use his natural size and reach advantage to dominate Junior.
The 28-year-old Eubank is also the smaller puncher. His KO percentage is a healthy 77 and two of his fights at super-middleweight have finished early. But the Hove fighter tends to overwhelm opponents, rather than lay them out with one shot.
Another possible chink in Eubank's armour is his lack of top-level experience. He showed against Yildirim in the last-eight that he can cope in even the most rarefied atmosphere. But Groves is arguably only the second elite fighter on his resume. The other, Billy Joe Saunders, handed Eubank his only defeat to date.
